AI Investment Fraud: Why Due Diligence Still Matters Most

Artificial Intelligence has rapidly become one of the most influential technologies across almost every industry. It has, no doubt, improved efficiency, transformed business processes and created new investment opportunities across the world. At the same time, AI has become a powerful marketing term - one that can sometimes discourage investors from asking basic but necessary questions.
In a case decided by a federal court in Brooklyn, United States, on August 18, 2025, is an important reminder that while technology continues to evolve, the fundamentals of responsible investing remain unchanged.
Summary
Mina Tadrus, the founder of the purported AI-powered hedge fund Tadrus Capital LLC, was sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to defrauding investors of more than USD 5.7 million.
According to the US Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division, investors were told that the fund used sophisticated AI and high-frequency trading strategies capable of generating exceptional returns. The fund also claimed to have significant purchasing power and portrayed itself as a resilient investment opportunity.
The US Attorney’s Office stated that the founder used the excitement surrounding new AI technology to persuade investors to place millions of dollars with the hedge fund. In reality, the case involved one of the oldest forms of investment fraud.
What Happened to the Investment?
Less than one per cent of the investors’ funds were used for legitimate investment activities, and none of those activities involved the promised AI-based algorithmic trading strategy.
Majority of the money was instead diverted towards personal expenses, business costs and payments made to earlier investors.
A Lesson for Global Investors
Investors are increasingly participating in global markets through overseas investments, startup opportunities etc. These opportunities are genuine and continue to grow.
Regulatory frameworks differ, disclosures vary and investors shouldn’t depend heavily on presentations, referrals or online information.
Before You Invest, Ask
-
Is the investment regulated?
-
Can the registration and regulatory history of the investment manager be independently verified?
-
Can the strategy be explained in clear and understandable terms?
-
Who holds custody of investor funds?
-
Is there an independent auditor?
A complex strategy is not necessarily fraudulent. However, an investment manager should still be able to explain how funds are deployed, how risks are managed and how performance is independently verified.
