What is a Digital Signature certificate (DSC)?
A DSC is a form of e-signature that authenticates the identity of the signer to ensure integrity and security of the signed document. DSC is legally recognized under the Information Technology Act, 2000 in India. It can be served as a proof of one’s identity but in electronic form and is used to digitally sign documents.
Several Indian authorities, including the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Income Tax Department, and GST portal, demand a DSC for activities including tendering and e-form filing with government agencies.
What is a Director Identification Number (DIN)?
A DIN is a unique identification number issued by the MCA to individuals intending to be appointed as a director in Indian companies. The said person must apply for the DIN allocation with the necessary authority using the designated form.

Can a foreign national apply for a DSC remotely?
Indeed, a foreign national can apply for a DSC remotely provided they send all the required documents. If the supporting documents are written in a language other than English, then those documents must be translated to English prior to submitting the application to the relevant authority. Documents must be submitted together – the original ones along with the official translated copies.
How long does it take to get a DSC?
Typically, the DSC is issued within 1–2 working days after successful completion of verification processes as prescribed by the certifying authorities.
How long is a DSC valid for?
The Certifying authorities are authorised to issue a DSC with a validity of one or two years, after which a new DSC is to be procured.
Can one DSC be used for multiple companies?
Yes, a single DSC can be used for signing documents related to multiple companies.
What is the interrelation between DSC and DIN?
To procure the DSC, DIN is not a pre-requisite. However, DSC is a mandatory requirement for the DIN application.
